The struggle to achieve happy endings often makes you overlook the most important thing in life — the present.

With a thumping heart, she went onto the internet to check her results. It has been a struggle of five years, which could finally bring her happiness or might doom her for her entire life. With trembling fingers, she logged onto her portal to check whether she got accepted into her dream Ivy League college or not. It was her lifelong passion to pursue Computer Science engineering. Still, due to financial constraints, all she could manage was to work hard for five years alongside preparing the essay and application for the scholarship. The day was finally here. She clicked the button and closed her eyes and said a silent prayer. The screen flashed bright green, and next to her name there it was: “Congratulations Aisha, your application has been accepted.”

The audience in the movie hall erupted with joy, and few sniffs and sobs were heard. People rejoiced at the sight of happy endings, and everything else faded into the background.

Do you sometimes wonder why people are so obsessed with the thought of happy endings? Why don’t people focus more on the present moment, but instead ruin it by thinking about tomorrow? Our socialization process has been exceptionally culturally motivated since our childhood. We have been made to understand at all times in our life, that happiness is a destination. Satisfaction is something that one will receive after struggling, so that is all we do. But this happens to take away our focus from living in the present. Let us see how this happiness motivated life takes a toll on our minds.

Why do happy endings matter so much?

When you are at a restaurant, do you find yourself drooling over the magnificent looking burger that just arrived at your table? It only takes a few minutes to devour the delicacy that probably took over an hour for the chef to put together and build. We often don’t realize the effort and hard work that goes into making something that provides us with happiness.

We similarly treat our lives. We wait for ages for that perfect moment to arrive. We don’t relish our days as it goes. Instead, we pester our minds and hearts in search of the destination. We need to be mindful regarding the small things in life.

Learn to enjoy the Perfect Imperfections

The idea behind fixating on a happy ending makes it difficult for people to enjoy the present. Why has it been so culturally as well as socially appropriated that it makes it difficult to enjoy the process? There are a few things people who fixate on happy endings worry about:

1. The ones who wait-

There exists a plethora of people who are waiting for the right moment to arrive. Some are waiting to get a job in their dream company while some are waiting to get married to the love of their life. Some might be saving up in pursuit of buying their dream car or getting a new house to move into. Some are waiting to have a baby while some are waiting for the right moment to adopt a dog. The list seems endless when it comes to considering people who are waiting for happiness. It seems that we all are waiting for something.

This whole pursuit behind achieving happiness is something that was taught to us since our childhood. We were told that we should keep striving until we reach our goals. This makes it extremely difficult for a person to live in the present. However, we need to understand that hard work and happiness can exist side by side too. We just need to work on that.

2. Striving for Perfection-

Since we have all grown up watching fantasy movies, where they show us everything works out in the end, we have all grown accustomed to the idea of perfection at the end of the struggle. Nobody taught us to enjoy the process and learn from it, whatsoever the result may be. People begin to postpone their idea of happiness by feeling guilty. They think that if they start to enjoy themselves, then they will lag in their work. People wait endlessly for their dreams to come true someday but forget to live in the moments of slowly fulfilling them.

It’s not that we were propagating the thought that we should not think about the future. It’s excellent to have a plan. But if you feel yourself getting overwhelmed by the idea about the future, it is an indication to think differently.

3. It’s all about the Little Things!

It’s high time that one should stop worrying about the future and start focusing on the present. After all, life is all about living the little things. Here is a list of things that one should do, to stay in the present and not worry about the future.

4. Learn how to Be Grateful

In the fast-paced world of technology and globalization, one might often forget about the small things that make one unique. People might be blessed with some special skills that go unnoticed in this world involved in a rat race. Gratitude is one feeling that one should always make it a point to feel. Psychologists from all over the world recommend that if one feels grateful every once in a while, then positive energy will always surround that person. It is necessary to remind ourselves that happiness is not a destination; it is a journey.

5. Learn the mantra of Carpe Diem

It is crucial to build a strong base for the future to look good. But isn’t that what makes us forget about living in the present? We need to learn the mantra of Carpe Diem or ‘live in the present’ to make it a point to enjoy now.

It is indispensable to feel peaceful and rested once in a while. Not everything is supposed to add to your box of talents or add a lien to your resume. Sit back and pick up that old hobby of yours. Call up some old friends from school and reconnect with them. Make it a point to do one productive task per day that gives you a burst of joy. Pet that dog on the street. Volunteer for a charity. Be that person what makes you feel content. Learn to live in the present and not worry about the future.

6. Break those Shackles of Negativity

If you don’t learn how to put those weights down, how will you make space for new things in your life? Learning to let go is a particular skill that one needs to master over time. It’s not too hard, but it is not easy either. Learn to let those thoughts of worry about the future go and make space for new positive reviews in your life. You can make it go once you talk about it loudly with your friend or family. Make that change happen.

7. Believe in Positive Energy

The first step towards being happy is believing in the positive energy of the world. All the negativity that has made you worried about your future makes it extremely difficult to focus on the good. Learn to move forward in the right direction and make it a point to believe in good things.

It is imperative to focus on the right side of things and let go of negative thoughts. If you always keep worrying about the future, then you are not mindful about the present. Every time you worry about the past and future, you are not being mindful in life. When mindfulness is practiced daily, you learn to expand your awareness towards positive thinking.
