Wisdom Comes with Age or Experience — Millennial Edition

“Adaptability is often required rather than adhering to the wisdom of proverbs.” — Dr. Paras

If you are here reading this article because of the headline, welcome. Now, before you are left confused with the quote above, let us clarify a few things.

“Wisdom comes with age or experience,” is a phrase that has become part of the dictionary of proverbs used worldwide. When you look it up on Google, you will find counteractive arguments in which some side for it, and some are against the notion.

Wisdom, a noun, describes the quality of having definitive Knowledge and experience to make informed and sensible decisions.

If you look at it from an outsider’s perspective, given the definition of the word, you’d think that Wisdom is dependent on age, right?

Well, then what about your 60-year old uncle who invested all his life savings on a stock market share that crashed? Wasn’t age supposed to make them aware of their life decisions?

It is where the argument falls short.

Let us explain this a bit better.

What Does the Science Say?

A study published in the Journal of Psychology and Aging suggests that fluid intelligence declines with age but doesn’t indicate whether or not the same affects decision-making abilities.

According to the study, even though older people’s brains do slow down, experience, and knowledge they acquire over the years make up for its lack.

The researchers tested the fluid and crystallized intelligence among the subjects of varying age groups.

The only limitation to the study was the perspective of the study. It was mainly focused on the financial and economic aspects of life experiences. It means that it doesn’t justify one’s overall Wisdom.

So, this study does not cover all the bases when fighting an argument about whether Wisdom comes with age and experience or either one of the two.

What is Lord Buddha’s analogy?

According to Lord Buddha, wisdom is only achieved by people who can control their minds and attain Enlightenment.

But, there have been multiple excerpts in mythology that depict how fleeting Wisdom is. It doesn’t matter who has it and who doesn’t. Unless you are willing to work your way through the experiences, wisdom is as unimportant as the color of the car you have.

The majority of people have a very intuitive understanding of wisdom. It is primarily achieved with the practical application of knowledge.

But, at the end of the day, you want to be wise, knowledgeable, and at the same time, compassionate. That is one of the primary teachings of Lord Buddha. Even though there are multiple definitions of Wisdom on the internet, pinning down one can be a little difficult.

It is with the experience that you unwind your lacking abilities and gradually work on them to attain better wisdom along the way. But, again, age is not the deciding factor at all. So, does wisdom come with age? It probably doesn’t.

Breaking Down with An Example

Let’s talk about Ritesh Agarwal, the CEO, and Founder of Oyo Rooms. If you have planned travel around the country, you’d probably know how convenient and budget-friendly OYO is.

But did you know when he started it? When he was just 19 years old.

Now, if we went with the traditional route of believing that Wisdom comes with age, this wouldn’t have been true then.

Wisdom is gained through life experiences, and Ritesh Agarwal and several of the budding successful Indian entrepreneurs are examples of that. When talking about “true wisdom comes from experience examples”, this is one of the biggest ones.

Millennials nowadays are not afraid to take chances and learn from their experiences. They are willing to fail to gain knowledge that eventually leads them to success.

Many people have this misconception that Wisdom defines higher intelligence, but that is not the case.

A person who is older and far more experienced in a single field doesn’t necessarily have more Wisdom than a younger person but has more experience in several fields.

Suppose you have years of experience in growing just potatoes, and there is someone with a better experience in growing, not just potatoes but onions and garlic. In that case, the latter person likely has more Wisdom in farming than the former one.

What Do We Conclude Then?

Let’s say that Wisdom is not dependent on your age. Much like how you shouldn’t blindly believe someone just because they are older than you, the same goes for Wisdom.

Millennials nowadays are learning young and taking chances at a very young age. Be it with their career or even with their finances, they are willing to test the waters and see what suits their choices and preferences the best.

It is one reason why young people nowadays are considered to have more Wisdom than the ones 5x their age.

To clarify your doubts, Wisdom comes through experience and not just age.

And, before we close and conclude this article,
